Recreational Cottage Lots Available in Western Newfoundland

The Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Environment and Conversation, announced today that 83 Crown land recreational cottage lots in Birchy Lake, western Newfoundland are being made available through an upcoming public draw. These lots range from $11,200 - $26,900 and will be sold as Crown grants (outright ownership) with the full price due upon signature of the title document.

“As demand for recreational cottage lots increases, I am pleased to announce Crown land is available to the people of the province to purchase for use as recreational cottage lots,” said Minister Hedderson. “We will ensure fair access to these recreational cottage lots through our public draw process, while continuing to consider the recreational needs of citizens in a fair and responsible manner.”

This is the second public draw for Crown land recreational cottage lots held in the province this year. A public draw was held in July for 36 recreational cottage lots at Bonne Bay Big Pond, Grand Lake and Sandy Lake in western Newfoundland.

Anyone interested in obtaining a lot must submit a public draw entry form to the Western Regional Lands Office in Corner Brook no later than 4:15 p.m., Friday, October 4, 2013. Entry forms received after that deadline will not be eligible. Entry forms can be printed from the website at www.env.gov.nl.ca/env or obtained from the Crown Lands office located at:

The Public Draw will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 16, 2013 at the Western Regional Lands Office, Ground Floor, Sir Richard Squires Building, Mount Bernard Avenue, Corner Brook, to determine selection order for the lots. Entrants may attend this meeting but attendance is not necessary. The randomly sorted list will be posted online at www.gov.nl.ca/env and at the Crown Lands offices following the draw. The list will not display any personal contact information. It is the responsibility of entrants to check for their ranking in the draw as they will not be notified directly.

The selection of lots will take place at a public meeting at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 30, 2013 at the Glynmill Inn, Corner Brook. Attendance by draw entrants or their formally designated proxy representative will be required. An application fee of $100 (plus $13 HST) and a $200 document processing fee must be paid at the time a lot is selected. These non-refundable fees will be charged towards the cost of processing the application and preparing title documents.

Anyone interested in entering the public draw is advised to inspect the lots and view the septic system evaluation reports prior to the selection meeting.
