Salmonier Nature Park Attracts More Visitors in 2013

Salmonier Nature Park recorded more than 40,000 visitors this year, a 15 per cent increase over 2012, the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Environment and Conservation announced today.

“I’m pleased to see so many residents and tourists taking the opportunity to walk the park trail and get a glimpse of the wildlife native to our province,” said Minister Hedderson. “People love to come to Salmonier Nature Park to see the animals in their natural surroundings which is why our government is continuing to make major improvements so the park remains a cornerstone attraction for our region.”

Since 2009, the Provincial Government has invested $4.3 million into an infrastructure renewal project to expand and revitalize environmental education, wildlife rehabilitation and nature-based tourism programs and services at the park. The project includes new buildings for the Technical Services and Wildlife Care and Rehabilitation Programs.

A new Wildlife Discovery Centre built to specifications from the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design system specification will house exhibits, a classroom, gift store and a café. This centre is funded through an additional $805,000 investment from the Newfoundland and Labrador Green Fund.

“These enhancements support the vision of a centre for environmental education and tourism which will entice even more people to visit this area and learn about our wildlife,” said the Honourable Felix Collins, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs and MHA for Placentia - St. Mary’s. “Salmonier Nature Park is a unique attraction and I encourage everyone to visit, not just once, but to return every year to take in the spectacular sights.”

Salmonier Nature Park will remain open from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. daily until October 14, 2013. School and community groups can book visits Monday to Friday until October 31.
