Environmental Assessment Bulletin

The Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Environment and Conservation, has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENT REQUIRED:

Wabush 3 Open Pit Mine Project             (Reg. 1711)
Proponent: Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOCC)

The minister has advised the proponent that an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) is required for this project. Additional information on the project and baseline information requirements will have to address, but are not limited to: terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, surface water and groundwater modeling, regional water resources, regional air quality analyses, analysis of socio-economic effects and alternatives to certain mine design components.

An Environmental Assessment Committee will be appointed to provide scientific and technical advice to the minister and to prepare draft guidelines for conducting the EIS. The public will be invited to provide comment on the draft guidelines.

UNDERTAKING RELEASED:

Forteau Wharf and Laydown Area             (Reg. 1669)
Proponent: Bay Bulls Properties Ltd.

The minister, following review of comments from the public and recommendation from the Assessment Committee, has determined that the Environmental Preview Report for the above project is considered satisfactory and the project is released from further environmental assessment, subject to the following condition:
