Environmental Assessment Bulletin
The Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Environment and Conservation, has
announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment
of the Environmental Protection Act.
DRAFT ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENT GUIDELINES FOR PUBLIC REVIEW:
Joyce Lake Direct Shipping Iron Ore Project
Proponent: Labec Century Iron Ore
(Reg. 1674)
The proposed Joyce Lake Direct Shipping Iron Ore Project in Labrador is
undergoing a provincial environmental assessment and requires an
Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the project. The Environmental
Assessment Committee has prepared draft EIS Guidelines that identify the
information that the proponent must include in its EIS. The Minister is
seeking public and aboriginal input into the draft EIS guidelines as
required by legislation. The public and aboriginal groups are invited to
review the Project and draft EIS Guidelines and provide comments during the
review period from
June 4, 2013 to July 15, 2013. Comments received will be
reviewed and considered before the EIS guidelines are finalized and issued
to the proponent.

The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (CEAA) is also conducting an
environmental assessment of this project under the
CEAA 2012 Act.

The project is released subject to the following condition:
- A vegetated, undisturbed
buffer must be maintained that will effectively screen quarry operations
from view in the area directly adjacent to the Trans Canada Highway.
