Women Encouraged to Enjoy the Great Outdoors

Women in Newfoundland and Labrador will have the opportunity to gain valuable outdoor skills such as hunting, fishing, hiking, backpacking and nature photography through the annual Becoming an Outdoors Woman program.

Sponsored by the Department of Environment and Conservation, the Becoming an Outdoors Woman program will take place at the Lavrock Camp Conference Centre on Salmonier Line from June 7 to 9.

“This is an incredible opportunity to enjoy nature and take part in learning some of the skills associated with outdoor survival,” said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Environment and Conservation. “We are so lucky to live in a province which has very pristine forests, ponds and beaches and I love to see people who are able to take advantage of the opportunity my department is offering them to participate and enjoy those elements.”

Participants have an opportunity to attend four half-day introductory sessions and experience the outdoors through the guidance of experienced instructors. The sessions are designed to give women the confidence and ability to pursue these activities.

The program begins noon on Friday, June 7, and ends with lunch at noon on Sunday, June 9. The registration cost is $240.00 and includes all meals, accommodations, and instruction materials. Participants must be 18 years of age to register. Although the program is geared towards women, men are also welcome to participate.
