Environment and Conservation
April 29, 2013
The following statement was given today in the House of Assembly by the
Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Environment and Conservation:
Nominations Sought for Environmental Leadership
Mr. Speaker, I rise today to remind my Honourable colleagues that the
deadline for nominations for the 2013 Environmental Awards, May 1, is fast
approaching. The awards program is an annual celebration of environmental
achievements in our province and raises awareness of the individuals, groups
and businesses that are taking action to protect and sustain our
environment.
This initiative, Mr. Speaker, is jointly sponsored by the Department of
Environment and Conservation, the Multi-Materials Stewardship Board, and the
Newfoundland and Labrador Women’s Institutes. There are six categories to
recognize outstanding environmental and conservation achievements. These
are: Individual; Community Group or Organization; Youth, Youth Group or
School; Municipality or Regional Waste Management Committee; and, Business
or Industry Leader.
In addition to being celebrated at an awards ceremony during Environment
Week, Mr. Speaker, each of the winners will also receive a $1,000 honorarium
from the MMSB to go towards furthering their own environmental projects or
to donate to an environmental cause of their choice.
Mr. Speaker, for more than 20 years, these annual awards have highlighted
the work of countless men and women who are true environmental ambassadors
for Newfoundland and Labrador. We all share responsibility for the
environment in our province, and that is why it is so important to recognize
the great work that is being done by those who demonstrate an impressive
passion for our environment.
I encourage everyone to look around them at the great work that is being
done to protect and preserve our environment, and submit a nomination to
recognize these outstanding individuals and groups.
Further information and the nomination form can be found on the Department
of Environment and Conservation website.
Thank you, Mr. Speaker.
