Environmental Assessment Bulletin

The Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Environment and Conservation, has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:

Jamestown Pressure Treated Lumber & Wood Manufacturing Facility
Proponent: Marwood Limited                                               (Reg. 1695)

The proponent proposes to establish a facility to produce pressure treated lumber to market local businesses and consumers throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. The facility will be located on the site of the former Jamestown Lumber Company Limited properties. The proposed facility will include make use of existing infrastructure including a 2,200 square foot dry kiln with shaving boiler; a 7,470 square foot sawmill building; a 9,700 square foot planer mill; a 1,780 square foot garage; and a 1,500 square foot office. There are two drilled wells on the property that will be utilized as well as an existing septic system. The facility will produce pressure-treated lumber and other manufactured products using lumber purchased from local sawmills and substitute with other supply only when material is not locally available. The rational of this undertaking is primarily to meet the growing demand for pressure-treated lumber and related products in Newfoundland and Labrador. Construction of the proposed facility will begin upon issue of approvals, with an anticipated construction period of four months.

The undertaking was registered on March 6, 2013; the deadline for public comments is April 9, 2013; and the minister’s decision is due by April 20, 2013.

Forest Management District 23 Five Year Operating Plan (2013-2017)
Proponent: Department of Natural Resources                              (Reg. 1694)

The proponent has submitted a Five-Year Operating Plan for Forest Management District 23 for the period of January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2017. Forest Management District 23 is situated on the mid-Labrador coast and is generally bounded by Groswater Bay and Lake Melville in the south, the Mulligan and Red Wine Rivers in the west and the Kanainktok Bay River and Kanainktok Bay in the north. The plan describes proposed forestry operations including: the harvesting of approximately 78,500 cubic metres of timber, the construction of approximately 20 kilometres of primary forest access road and silviculture activities on approximately 375 hectares.

The undertaking was registered on February 28, 2013; the deadline for public comments is April 9, 2013; and the minister’s decision is due by April 14, 2013.
