Province Boasts Best Ever Graduation Rate

Newfoundland and Labrador is celebrating its best ever high school graduation rate, with 94.2 per cent of eligible graduates earning a diploma for the 2012-13 school year.

“This is a tremendous achievement and speaks to the commitment of the students themselves, their teachers, parents, as well as school board and department personnel,” said the Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Education. “While we have consistently been over a 90 per cent graduation rate since 2008, this is the best result we have ever recorded. I believe it speaks to the growing realization among our students that education is the key to a successful future, and that it all starts with a high school diploma.”

An eligible graduate is any student who enters a school year with the potential to graduate in that year.

Minister Jackman also noted that, over the past several years, more students are graduating with an honours or academic diploma as opposed to a general diploma.

“This bodes well for our students, as it means more are graduating with diplomas that allow them to pursue a wide range of post-secondary opportunities,” Minister Jackman said. “It’s all about having choices – and providing our students with the best opportunities to realize their lifelong goals.”

Information on graduation rates over the past 10 years can be viewed in the backgrounder below.

Meanwhile, the 2012-13 graduation rate could improve even more. From November 4 to 7, the Department of Education will be offering high school students an opportunity to write supplementary exams in seven public exam courses. The deadline to register is October 25, 2013.
