Media Advisory: Minister to Participate in Launch of Healthy Eating Program

The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Education, will join Fortune Bay-Cape La Hune MHA Tracey Perry and Mi’kmaq Chief Misel Joe, for the provincial launch of the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s Healthy Lunch and Snacks Awareness Program on Monday, September 30, at the Se’t Anneway Kegnamogwom School in Conne River. The event begins at 10:00 a.m.

Through the Healthy Lunch and Snacks Awareness Program, approximately 5,000 Grade 4 students throughout the province will receive a reusable lunch bag, a ‘healthy plate’ which depicts a balanced diet based on Canada’s Food Guide, as well as a booklet containing simple and nutritious snack and lunch recipes for children and their parents.

The Provincial Government supports healthy eating in the school environment through the Healthy Students, Healthy Schools initiative, which includes support for implementation of the Provincial School Food Guidelines; Living Healthy Commotions, school health liaison consultants placed in regional school district offices, and through which more than $3.3 million has been invested on cafeteria and kitchen equipment upgrades in schools. Additional support is provided to the Kids Eat Smart Foundation and the School Milk Foundation.
