Continued Support for Heritage Fairs Program in Schools

The Provincial Government is once again providing $15,000 to support this year’s Heritage Fairs Program, which will involve about 100 schools throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.

“The Heritage Fairs Program has been an important and positive experience for thousands of students for many years,” said the Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Education. “This type of activity plays a major role in developing research and presentation skills, as well as connecting students to their heritage and developing their sense of identity.”

The Newfoundland and Labrador Heritage Fairs Program began in 1997 as part of a national initiative designed to bring history to life for students in Grades 4-9. Directly linked to the school curriculum, the program allows students to showcase projects they have created, using a variety of mediums, in school and regional fairs to be held throughout the province in the spring of 2014.

In this province, the program is implemented through the Historic Sites Association of Newfoundland and Labrador.

“The Historic Sites Association is proud to partner again with the Department of Education to provide the Heritage Fair Program to youth throughout Newfoundland and Labrador,” said Lee Ann Montgomery, Chair of the Historic Sites Association Board of Directors. “Their research and presentation of the heritage and culture of their communities and the province is a useful and rewarding experience for students.”

The Provincial Government has invested over $17.4 million since 2005 in its Cultural Connections Strategy, which aims to enhance arts programs and cultural content in schools across the province.
