Provincial Government Supports Conference
Promoting a More Peaceful, Just Society

A unique gathering of youth, parents, educators and other individuals who work with young people, is taking place this week at Memorial University – all in an effort to better understand the cause and effect of everyday violence and injustice in society.

“As a sponsor of At the EDGE – Creating Direction for Peace and Justice, the Provincial Government has provided approximately $30,000 to help facilitate the event and to sponsor the attendance of several principals and teachers,” said the Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Education, who will attend the opening of the conference tomorrow (Wednesday, August 21), at 1:00 p.m., at the Bruneau Centre auditorium, Memorial University, St. John’s.

“The conference is bringing together individuals and organizations who believe in helping to create socially-just communities,” Minister Jackman added. “As such, it certainly complements our efforts to ensure all students are treated with dignity and respect, through our Safe and Caring Schools initiative.”

The conference will focus on such themes as how social and cultural values impact youth; how adults and institutions instill these values in young people, and how everyone can become more effectively engaged in addressing bullying, social injustice, and attitudes and actions that cause harm.
