Plumbing Upgrade Scheduled for Burin Bay Arm School

Systematic upgrades to school infrastructure are continuing across Newfoundland and Labrador this year, including a $587,600 upgrade to the plumbing system at Donald C. Jamieson Academy in Burin Bay Arm. The tender for the work was recently awarded to Hann’s Electric Ltd., of Wesleyville.

“The plumbing retrofit will include the replacement of existing lines and fixtures, and is part of more than $2 million in upgrades approved for the school over the past several years,” said the Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Education. “This latest project is in addition to the roofing, window replacements, and interior renovations completed at this school, and will ensure this facility continues to be a safe and comfortable learning environment for students and staff.”

Donald C. Jamieson Academy is a K-7 school which serves about 380 students.

“Our government continues to make investments in existing K-12 infrastructure to ensure quality learning environments for students across our province,” Minister Jackman added. “Over the past 10 years, close to $220 million has been allocated for more than 1,850 repairs and maintenance projects, including roofing, window and siding replacements; electrical and plumbing upgrades, and more.”

Budget 2013: A Sound Plan, A Secure Future provides almost $102 million for new and ongoing school infrastructure projects, including more than $21.4 million for repairs and maintenance projects. Since 2004, about $620 million has been allocated for school infrastructure throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.
