Roofing Upgrade Planned for William Mercer Academy

A tender valued at more than $220,000 has been awarded to Gallant’s Roofing of Benoit’s Cove for a partial roof replacement at William Mercer Academy in Dover.

“With this latest contract, more than $770,000 has been allocated for improvements to William Mercer Academy since 2004, including upgrades to the electrical and heating systems” said the Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Education. “Our government is committed to investing in the upkeep of our schools to ensure they continue to serve the needs of students, staff and the entire school community.”

Work on the school, which serves Grades K-9, will begin this spring.

“Upgrades that keep our schools modern and safe for students and teachers are good news and show this government’s commitment to delivering the best educational environment,” said Terra Nova MHA Sandy Collins. “I am sure the people in Dover and Hare Bay will welcome these improvements to their school.”

Budget 2013: A Sound Plan, A Secure Future provides almost $102 million for new and ongoing school infrastructure projects, including more than $21.4 million for major repairs and maintenance projects.

Since 2004, about $620 million has been allocated for school infrastructure throughout the province, including almost $220 million for more than 1,850 repairs and maintenance projects, including roofing, window and siding replacements, electrical upgrades and more.
