St. George’s Schools to Get Window Upgrades
Two schools in St. George’s will be receiving upgrades following the recent awarding of a tender valued at almost $165,000 to Noble’s Construction Ltd. of Springdale.
“All windows will be replaced at Our Lady of Mercy Elementary while Appalachia High will see a partial window replacement and improvements carried out to the entrance to improve accessibility,” said the Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Education. “The Provincial Government has taken a systematic approach to improving existing school facilities to ensure they remain safe and serviceable learning environments. Since 2004, more than 1,850 repair and maintenance projects have been approved for schools throughout the province.”
This latest tender is in addition to $317,000 approved in recent years for roofing and other improvements at both schools.
“These vital upgrades to Our Lady of Mercy Elementary and Appalachia High are examples of how our government is making smart, strategic investments for the future of our communities,” said the Honourable Joan Shea, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills and MHA for St. George’s-Stephenville East. “We know that education opens the door to opportunity, and we will keep making that a priority, both in the Bay St. George region, and across the province.”
Since 2004, about $567 million has been allocated for school infrastructure throughout the province. Nine new schools have opened; 10 more are in various stages of planning or construction; 12 major extension and renovation projects have been completed, and seven more are underway or in the planning stages.
