Schools Stand Up to Bullying

The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Education, joined students and staff at Sacred Heart Academy in Marystown today (Wednesday, February 27) to mark Pink Day/Stand Up To Bullying Day, and to announce this year’s recipients of the Safe and Caring Schools Special Project Awards.

“Today, as school communities across the province take a stand against bullying and harassment, I take the opportunity to congratulate all school administrators, teachers and students who are creating and maintaining safe, respectful and inclusive learning environments,” said Minister Jackman. “People are talking about this issue; action is being taken, and together our efforts are making a difference.”

Minister Jackman also took the opportunity to announce that a total of 43 schools have been awarded a Safe and Caring Schools Special Project Award, valued at up to $500, in recognition of their creative efforts to promote their schools as safe and caring places to learn and grow. The award funding, totalling $21,500, is being used for a wide range of activities to promote inclusion and respect, such as drama, musical and multi-media productions, visual art projects or awareness days.

A complete list of 2012 Safe and Caring Schools Project Award winners can be viewed in the backgrounder below.
The Safe and Caring Schools Policy was introduced in 2006 as part of the Provincial Government’s over-arching Violence Prevention Initiative. Over the years, the initiative has been proactive in developing programs aimed at early intervention and education on violence prevention.
In November 2012, the Provincial Government announced it is planning to strengthen the way the education system reports, and responds to, incidents of bullying and aggressive behaviours among students. In addition to province-wide focus group consultations, a consultation webpage was established at: www.ed.gov.nl.ca/edu/consultations/index.html. Anyone who wishes to provide feedback, and has not yet done so, can access the webpage until March 8, 2013.
