Principals Recognized with National Award

The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Education, today congratulated two exemplary school principals in Newfoundland and Labrador who have been named among 51 of Canada’s Most Outstanding Principals for 2013.

Joy Brown of Coley’s Point Primary in Bay Roberts and Robin McGrath of Holy Cross Elementary School in Holyrood, both employed by the Eastern School District, were selected for the honour by The Learning Partnership, a national organization devoted to strong public education systems.

“A strong principal is the key to an active and engaged school community,” said Minister Jackman. “Principals set the tone for the school, provide direction for staff, and ensure our students receive a quality education in safe and nurturing learning environments. I congratulate Ms. Brown and Mr. McGrath for receiving this honour, and I thank all the principals and teachers in this province for the great work they do each day.”

Ms. Brown and Mr. McGrath will receive their awards at a ceremony in Toronto on February 26.

“Principals are leaders within our schools who work closely with their students, staff and the entire school community,” said Dr. Bruce Vey, CEO/Director of Education of Eastern School District. “Ms. Brown and Mr. McGrath are shining examples of the dedicated individuals who work in our school district and I congratulate them for receiving such well-deserved recognition.”

Principals are nominated for the Most Outstanding Principals awards by their peers, school staff and community members in each province and territory. Nominations are reviewed and final winners selected on a representation-by-population basis by a national selection committee made up of a group of Canadian education, community and private sector leaders.
