Media Advisory: Parliamentary Secretary to Recognize Merchant Navy Veterans Day

Dan Crummell, Parliamentary Secretary to the Honourable Joan Shea, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills, will speak at a memorial service recognizing Merchant Navy Veterans Day tomorrow (Wednesday, August 28) at 10:00 a.m. outside the Marine Institute, Ridge Road, St. John’s. The ceremony will also mark the 16th anniversary of the unveiling and dedication of Newfoundland and Labrador’s Merchant Navy Memorial.

Merchant mariners played a vital role in the Second World War, facing constant threat as they transported desperately needed food, equipment, and personnel to Britain and other Allied countries on non-military vessels. Thousands of merchant mariners were killed at sea; hundreds more were captured and sent to prisoner of war camps.
