Adult Basic Education to be Delivered at 14 New Sites
Throughout Newfoundland and Labrador

Following through on a commitment to help adult learners in every region advance their education in the most effective way possible, the Provincial Government provided details today on the delivery of the provincial Adult Basic Education program. A successful tendering process will now see 14 new sites delivering the program to adult learners in all communities where it had previously been provided by College of the North Atlantic.

“The awarding of successful bids for all tendered Adult Basic Education locations in Newfoundland and Labrador reflects the Provincial Government's unwavering commitment to delivering quality adult education programming that is efficient, affordable and effective,” said the Honourable Kevin O’Brien, acting Minister of Advanced Education and Skills. “As students continue along their learning journey, they can be confident that the education provider in each location will support them in achieving their life goals.”

In Budget 2013: A Sound Plan. A Secure Future, the Provincial Government announced that the provincial Adult Basic Education program would be moved out of College of the North Atlantic to allow the college to better focus on the delivery of post-secondary programs that meet a growing demand for skilled labour. Since then, staff with Advanced Education and Skills have been working with adult learners to help in their transition and will now follow up to assist with their move to the new training providers.

All institutions and organizations that deliver the Adult Basic Education program in the province are required to meet quality standards as defined by the Department of Advanced Education and Skills.

“With a growing demand for skilled labour and the need for an educated workforce at an all-time high, it is vital that our government make improvements and investments that support education and career opportunities for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians,” said Minister O’Brien. “This includes improving the delivery of Adult Basic Education for learners to help them secure a prosperous future.”
