Minister Congratulates Skilled Career Day Winners and Participants
The Honourable Joan Shea, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills, today congratulated participants and competition winners who took part in the 16th Annual Skills Canada Provincial Competition. Over 300 students from across the province competed in trade, technology and skill competitions, which took place during Skilled Career Day on Friday, April 12, at College of the North Atlantic in St. John’s. The gold medal winners of the competitions will form Team Newfoundland and Labrador and will compete at the Skills Canada National Competition in Vancouver from June 5-8.
"Congratulations to all award winners and competitors,” said Minister Shea. “With the demand for skilled trades increasing significantly across Newfoundland and Labrador, fuelled by developments such as Muskrat Falls and Hebron, we know that generating an interest in skilled trades for our young people, the province’s next generation, is critical to our long-term success.”
Through Budget 2013: A Sound Plan. A Secure Future, the Provincial Government is investing $466 million this year for new and continuing funding to enhance skills, training and opportunity. Budget 2013 is also ensuring education in the skilled trades is more accessible and affordable than ever before through an ongoing tuition freeze at Memorial University and College of the North Atlantic.
“Since 2003, our government has worked hard to build the province’s skilled workforce and ensure young people are ready for the growing needs in industry,” said Minister Shea. “We will continue to move forward with key partners like Skills Canada to maximize opportunities here in Newfoundland and Labrador.”
