More Wharf Repairs Scheduled for Coastal Labrador
The rehabilitation of docking facilities in coastal Labrador continues with a tender call for repairs and maintenance to wharves in Nain and Makkovik.
“Maintaining marine transportation infrastructure is vital to preserving a quality transportation system,” said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Transportation and Works. “This work will ensure these important community facilities will continue to serve as valuable transportation links for coastal Labrador.”
Work will include the repair, adjustment, or replacement of various components of the facilities in each community, which may include fenders, wheelguards, ladders, and deck components.
“The docking facilities in coastal Labrador are gateways for the shipment of goods and services, as well as for tourism opportunities in the north,” said the Honourable Nick McGrath, Minister for Intergovernmental and Aboriginal Affairs and Minister Responsible for Labrador Affairs. “A goal of the Northern Strategic Plan is to provide an integrated transportation system that is responsive to the needs of our communities, and this maintenance work will help us meet this goal.”
Budget 2012: People and Prosperity remains focused on the needs of Labradorians with more than $158 million being invested this year. By the end of the current fiscal year, total spending through the Northern Strategic Plan and other Labrador-related initiatives will have exceeded $3.5 billion since 2004. Budget 2012 includes a total of approximately $30 million to enhance marine services in the province and an investment of $4 million for maintenance and upgrades to provincial ferry terminals and wharves.
