Symposium Explores Historical Significance of Natural Disasters

The Association of Newfoundland and Labrador Archives is hosting a public symposium called Disasters and the Archives on Friday, November 23, to commemorate Archives Week in St. John’s.

“This week’s symposium will explore the many natural disasters that have occurred in the province and how they have been documented in the archives,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “Our professional archivists preserve and record our history and offer important insight into our past. I encourage residents to participate in the various discussions and presentations held at the symposium.”

The Disasters and the Archives symposium takes place from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Foran-Greene Room at the St. John’s City Hall. The price of admission is $20, which includes lunch. Members of the public can pre-register by calling the Association of Newfoundland and Labrador Archives at 726-2867.

“The celebration of Archives Week until November 24 provides the Association of Newfoundland and Labrador Archives with the opportunity to highlight the important task of preserving and making available the documentary heritage of our province,” said Jenny Seeman, President of the Association Newfoundland and Labrador Archives. “Since 2012 is a landmark year for many disasters that have occurred in the province, this year’s symposium will focus on maritime and natural disasters and how they are represented in archival material.”

Since 1983, the Association of Newfoundland and Labrador Archives has been active in providing and promoting education and training for archivists, offering advisory services, administering grants, publishing a regular newsletter, and promoting public awareness of the value of the province’s archival records.
