Residents Invited to Participate in Culture Days

Culture Days was officially launched throughout Newfoundland and Labrador today. The Honourable Derrick Dalley, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, was at the St. John’s event to help celebrate the line-up of provincial activities planned for this coming weekend (September 28 to 30).

“The Provincial Government is supportive of this grassroots initiative to showcase culture in Newfoundland and Labrador,” said Minister Dalley. “The long-term success of Culture Days depends on the creativity and participation of community groups throughout the province. I encourage communities to get involved and to add their own cultural activity to the more than 60 events happening across the province this weekend. I also invite residents to visit the Culture Days events in their region.”

Culture Days is a collaborative, Canada-wide volunteer movement to raise the awareness, accessibility, participation, and engagement of all Canadians in the arts and cultural life of their communities.

“I am very proud that our province is so actively involved with Culture Days,” said Amy House, Chair of the organizing committee for Culture Days Newfoundland and Labrador. “Cultural expression is second nature to all the people of Newfoundland and Labrador. It is an every day occurrence here, but it's special to join forces with the rest of the country and in a unified celebration. Culture rocks!”

The Provincial Government has invested $50,000 since the inception of Culture Days in Newfoundland and Labrador three years ago. Culture Days has something for everyone, from visual arts, heritage, theatre, dance and music, to avant-garde performance art, new/digital media and spoken word. Since the cultural strategy Creative Newfoundland and Labrador: The Blueprint for Development and Investment in Culture was introduced in 2006, the Provincial Government has invested over $56 million in new funding in the cultural and heritage sectors.
