Provincial Government Supports Newfoundland and Labrador Winter Games

The host committee for the 2014 Newfoundland and Labrador Winter Games unveiled their logo in Clarenville today (Monday, September 17). The Honourable Derrick Dalley, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, was at the event to announce the Provincial Government’s investment of $350,000 towards the games, which includes $150,000 for travel costs for athletes, coaches, and managers.

“I was delighted to be in Clarenville to join the host committee of the 2014 Newfoundland and Labrador Winter Games,” said Minister Dalley. “The games provide an opportunity for athletes, coaches, managers, and volunteers to compete on a provincial level, learn from one another, and to meet new friends. It’s an experience of a lifetime.”

The Newfoundland and Labrador Games are held every two years alternating summer and winter. The province provides the host community with financial assistance for the operation and administration of the games.

“Government’s continued support for the Newfoundland and Labrador Winter Games is certainly appreciated by all those involved with the games, particularly the host community of Clarenville,” said the Honourable Ross Wiseman, MHA for Trinity North and Speaker of the House of Assembly. “In fact, the games will benefit the entire region economically and will showcase winter activities, such as skiing.”

The 2014 Newfoundland and Labrador Games Winter Games will be held in Clarenville from March 1 to March 9, 2014. It is expected that more than 1,500 athletes, officials and coaches will participate.

“The excitement for the 2014 Winter Games is building and the unveiling of our logo marks another milestone in our preparations,” said Greg Pittman, Chair of the Host Committee. “We appreciate the continued support of the Provincial Government and their commitment to young athletes.”

The games support the goals and strategic directions of the recreation and sport strategy (2007), Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador.
