Provincial Government Invests in Grand Bank Theatre Festival

Lighthouse Productions, organizer of the Grand Bank Theatre Festival, has received $40,000 in operational funding through the Provincial Government’s Cultural Economic Development Program.

“Each year the Grand Bank Theatre Festival features a wide variety of performances enjoyed by both visitors and residents of the Burin Peninsula region,” said the Honourable Derrick Dalley, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “This season’s line up features many genres including comedy and music. There will also be a special showing of Theatre Newfoundland and Labrador’s award-winning, Tempting Providence, the Nurse Myra Bennett story.”

The festival is held in the Grand Bank Theatre and runs from July 16 through to August 25.

“The Grand Bank Theatre is a great anchor attraction for the Burin Peninsula that provides many economic and cultural benefits,” said the Honourable Darin King, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture and MHA for Grand Bank. “Today’s announcement continues to demonstrate our government’s commitment to the arts community, as well as economic development in rural Newfoundland and Labrador.”

“Funding through the Cultural Economic Development Program is the cornerstone of our theatre organization,” said Berni Stapleton, Artistic Director, Grand Bank Theatre Festival. “The confidence and investment this represents has been and continues to be crucial to our cultural, professional, and economic development. We are always excited about the possibilities ahead for us and our region when we know we have this ongoing relationship.”

Budget 2012: People and Prosperity provides $2.9 million through its Cultural Economic Development Program to support arts, cultural, and heritage initiatives in the province. Projects are selected based on the strength of the business plan, vision, and potential development within the sector.
