Riverwood Academy Receives Community Capital Grant

The Funds for Fun Playground Committee has received a $15,000 grant to purchase playground equipment through the Provincial Government’s Community Capital Grants Program. Funding will be used to construct a playground at Riverwood Academy in Wings Point.

“Our government contributes financial support to organizations through the Community Capital Grants Program so that appropriate recreation and sport infrastructure is provided to communities,” said the Honourable Derrick Dalley, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “This project at Riverwood Academy will provide children and youth with a great opportunity to enhance their level of physical activity.”

The Funds for Fun Playground Committee is among the many community-based organizations, schools, municipalities, and recreation commissions which have received funding to upgrade their recreation and sport infrastructure through these latest Capital Grant Program investments.

“This funding will be a huge benefit to the residents of Gander Bay as they edge closer to seeing their hard work pay off,” said Wade Verge, MHA for Lewisporte. “Many local people have worked diligently toward the completion of this project. I am very pleased that our government is supportive of great projects like this in Wings Point. Young people from the entire area will soon be able to enjoy playing at a new and wonderful facility.”

Eli Cross, MHA for Bonavista North, said the playground committee should be commended for their efforts to provide a safe and healthy environment in which children can play and get physically active.

“This government has a great history of promoting projects that enhance quality physical recreation,” said Mr. Cross. “I am proud to work with my colleague, Mr. Verge, to assist in bringing this project to fruition. The playground will be used by youth from the area.”

Budget 2012: People and Prosperity provides $8.6 million to support recreation and sport in the province. Since the launch of the Provincial Government’s recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador (2007), more than $70 million has been committed to recreational and sport infrastructure, programming, and athlete development throughout the province.
