Newman Sound Men’s Choir Wins World Championship

The province’s own Newman Sound Men’s Choir was named a world champion in the Men’s Chamber Choir category at the 2012 World Choir Games in Cincinnati, Ohio, this past weekend. The Honourable Derrick Dalley, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, today congratulated the 23-member choir on their prestigious win.

“The entire province is proud to see the Newman Sound Men’s Choir be the first from Canada to win a championship at the World Choir Games,” said Minister Dalley. “The music sector is an important contributor to our province’s cultural industries. Newfoundland and Labrador is well known for a culture steeped in strong musical tradition, so it is wonderful to see this talented group participate in this international competition for the first time and succeed.”

The Provincial Government provided Newman Sound Men’s Choir $10,000, through the Cultural Economic Development Program, to offset the costs associated with competing at the World Championship event.
