2013 Labrador Winter Games Board of Directors Announced
Planning for the 2013 Labrador Winter Games is officially underway with the board of directors now in place. The Honourable Derrick Dalley, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, announced the members of the board today.
“I am very pleased with the composition of the board of directors for the 2013 Labrador Winter Games,” said Minister Dalley. “Planning and implementation of an event of this calibre requires experience, dedication, and leadership. We are certainly fortunate to have such a competent group of individuals in the community willing to take on this responsibility.”
Board members are Joe Goudie (Chair), Leo Abbass, Ron Bowles, Sterling Peyton, Andrew Battcock, Winnie Healey, Evelyn Ryan, Sheila Downer, Rick Lewis, Paul Rich, Rex Goudie, Lt. Col Andrew Fleming, and John Andersen.
“I am so pleased to see board representation from all regions of Labrador for the 2013 Labrador Winter Games,” said the Honourable Nick McGrath, Minister of Intergovernmental and Aboriginal Affairs and Minister Responsible for Labrador Affairs. “Every three years we come together from all areas of the Big Land to honour the cultural heritage of Labrador. It is truly a unique event where sport and culture come together for a celebration of people and traditions.”
The Labrador Winter Games are held every three years in Happy Valley-Goose Bay with more than 400 athletes representing up to 30 Labrador communities to celebrate the sporting and cultural heritage of Labrador.
As announced in Budget 2012: People and Prosperity, the Provincial Government is investing $500,000 to support the 2013 Labrador Winter Games. The games support the goals and strategic directions of the recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador.
