Minister Congratulates Recipients of Stars and Legends Awards

This past weekend, Sport Newfoundland and Labrador presented the 2012 Provincial Sport Awards to seven recipients and inducted two women and four men into the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Hall of Fame. The awards were presented during the 2012 Annual Stars and Legends Awards Gala held Saturday, April 14, at the Sheraton Hotel in St. John’s.

The Honourable Derrick Dalley, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, attended the gala and extended congratulations to all of the award winners and inductees.

“This unique event recognizes those in the province who have achieved the highest level of excellence in their sport and also honours the men and women who have shaped sport in Newfoundland and Labrador,” said Minister Dalley. “I congratulate the tremendous dedication of our provincial athletes, coaches, teams and executive members, as well as the remarkable accomplishments of our Hall of Fame members. Sport continues to flourish in this province because of their combined efforts.”

The newest members of the Newfoundland and Labrador Hall of Fame are: Vivian “Joy” Burt, Athlete (Powerlifting, Soccer); George “Bow” Collier, Athlete (Soccer); Paul McCloy, Athlete (Athletics); Debby Power, Athlete (Softball, Ball Hockey, Ice Hockey); Christopher Facey, Athlete/Builder (Athletics, Soccer); and, George LeFeuvre, Builder (Cross-country Skiing).

The evening also included the presentation of the Provincial Sport Awards. Awards were presented in the following categories: Junior Female Athlete of the Year – Jillian Forsey; Junior Male Athlete of the Year – Owen Daley: Senior Female Athlete of the Year – Sarah Davis; Senior Male Athlete of the Year – Ciaran Hearn; Executive of the Year – Rick Graham; Coach of the Year – Noel “Jake” Stanford; and, Team of the Year – The 2011 Clarenville Caribous.

“Once again this year we were witness to the tremendous amount of talent we have in our province,” said Doug Fowler, President of Sport Newfoundland and Labrador. “Each and every one of our annual award finalists and Hall of Fame inductees should be proud of their accomplishments and take pride in their contribution to sport in Newfoundland and Labrador.”

Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador provides $11.5 million to support recreation and sport in the province. Since the launch of the Provincial Government’s recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador (2007), more than $70 million has been committed to recreational and sport infrastructure, programming, and athlete development throughout the province.
