Aboriginal Groups Encouraged to Apply to Cultural Heritage Program

The Provincial Government’s Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Program is now accepting applications for 2012. Aboriginal organizations in Newfoundland and Labrador are encouraged to apply prior to the April 15, 2012 deadline.

“We are committed to preserving and celebrating Newfoundland and Labrador’s Aboriginal traditions,” said the Honourable Derrick Dalley, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “Consequently, the Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Program has provided funding to various initiatives that safeguard our province’s Aboriginal culture and heritage for the last four years.”

The Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Program supports eligible applicants in the safeguarding of traditions and culture including language, traditional knowledge and skills, storytelling, music, games and other pastimes, knowledge of the landscape, customs, cultural practices and beliefs, food customs, and living off the land.

“Newfoundland and Labrador has a rich Aboriginal cultural diversity, and programs like this play an important role in helping to preserve Aboriginal heritage,” said the Honourable Nick McGrath, Minister for Intergovernmental and Aboriginal Affairs. “I encourage all established Aboriginal organizations to consider applying in celebration of traditional culture.”

Successful applicants may receive up to $15,000 for projects that document, pass on, and celebrate cultural traditions. For short-term events that recognize traditional culture, a grant of up to $1,000 is available. Applications are reviewed by the Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Advisory Committee, comprising representatives from Aboriginal groups throughout the province.
