Minor Hockey Celebrated Across Newfoundland and Labrador

Starting tomorrow (Saturday, January 14) more than 10,000 registered minor hockey players in the province, along with coaches, officials, managers and volunteers, will celebrate hockey as they kick off 2012 Minor Hockey Week, taking place January 14-21.

“Year after year, the sport of hockey in Newfoundland and Labrador continues to grow and I encourage participation of all players, regardless of their level of ability,” said the Honourable Derrick Dalley, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “This week, we acknowledge our minor hockey players and reflect upon the recreational and social benefits of the sport, as well as the development of physical abilities and teamwork skills. I encourage all the players to enjoy themselves. I thank the numerous coaches, managers, officials, and parents who volunteer their time to support minor hockey. Their dedication is truly appreciated.”

This year’s theme is Teamwork Makes the Dream Work.

“We believe Minor Hockey Week is a very important time to celebrate our game,” said Jack Lee, President of Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador. “We extend our thanks to the volunteers and wish all the young boys and girls fun during their respective events during the week. We want members to focus on fun in the game as they participate in their various competitions and camps, and remember that everybody has to work together to make a positive experience for the players.”

The Provincial Government provides over $30,000 annually to Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador to support its programs throughout the province. Since 1935, the association has been the face of amateur hockey in the province promoting, supervising, and regulating competition in all recognized categories.
