Poster Contest Winners to be Recognized During National Forest Week 2012

Residents of Newfoundland and Labrador are encouraged to consider the link between healthy forests and healthy communities during National Forest Week 2012, September 23-29.

“The forest plays an important role in the lives of all residents, whether they work in the forest industry, are avid outdoors people or just enjoy the close proximity of the forest to most of our communities,” said the Honourable Jerome Kennedy, Minister of Natural Resources and Minister Responsible for the Forestry and Agrifoods Agency. “National Forest Week is an opportunity to reflect on what the forests mean to us and I encourage all residents to participate in the events planned throughout the province.”

Tree-planting ceremonies and presentations to school-age children are among the activities planned to mark National Forest Week 2012. The theme this year, Healthy Forests, Healthy Communities, will be celebrated in many municipalities where the forest is used for traditional means, such as wood harvesting, lumber production, pulp and paper manufacturing and the manufacture of wood pellets for home heating appliances. A list of National Forest Week events is available at: www.nr.gov.nl.ca/nr/forestry/index.html

In addition, the Department of Natural Resources will recognize the winners of the 2012 National Forest Week Poster Contest. This past spring, Grade 5 students were invited to participate in a province-wide contest. A provincial winner and three regional winners have been selected.

Tiffany Conners, a student at Cape St. Francis Elementary in Pouch Cove, is the provincial winner. She will receive an Apple iPad and her class will be offered a field trip with forestry staff during National Forest Week. In Addition, Cape St. Francis will receive a new computer system.

Regional winners are Christian Boone, a student at Millcrest Academy in Grand Falls-Windsor, Eastern region; Daniel Hancock, Labrador Straits Academy, L’Anse au Loup, Labrador region; and Kaitlyn Roberts, Green Bay South Academy, Robert’s Arm, Western region. Each regional winner will receive an Apple iPod and a framed version of their poster. Twelve entries from the contest will be featured on the 2013 National Forestry Week calendar. Judging was based on originality, creativity and adherence to the theme.
