Half a Million Dollars for Municipal Infrastructure in Exploits

Approximately $500,000 in Provincial Government funding will be invested in the Exploits region through the 2012 Municipal Capital Works Program.

“Quality drinking water and reliable waste water systems and roads are essential to municipalities and the residents who live there,” said the Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs. “This investment will result in improvements to this important infrastructure in Bishop’s Falls and Point Leamington.”

The Town of Bishop’s Falls will receive funding for road improvements, while Point Leamington will complete water and sewer improvements and replace a water intake at the town pump house. Funding is cost-shared based on population, with the Provincial Government providing 80 per cent of the total project cost for the Town of Bishop’s Falls and 90 per cent of the cost for the Town of Point Leamington.

“This is a welcome investment as it is important that the Town of Bishop's Falls can move forward with continued road upgrades for its residents and with this work the Town of Point Leamington will be able to provide reliable drinking water for the community,” said Clayton Forsey, MHA for Exploits. “I am pleased that these communities can avail of the Provincial Government’s cost-shared ratio program, making it possible for communities in the Exploits area to access funding to improve municipal infrastructure.”

Since 2008, the Provincial Government has invested approximately $13 million in the Exploits area for municipal infrastructure.

Budget 2012: People and Prosperity included $130 million over two years for municipal capital works projects throughout the province. Since 2008, the Provincial Government has invested over $500 million in municipal capital works projects which has resulted in improved municipal infrastructure across the province. These projects have provided municipalities the opportunity to secure, develop and improve infrastructure for residents and support the long-term sustainability of growth and development of communities throughout the province.

The Provincial Government has also maintained improved cost-shared funding ratios established in 2008 to benefit municipalities. For communities with populations below 3,000, the Provincial Government will continue to invest 90 per cent of the cost of new infrastructure with the municipality providing 10 per cent; 80 per cent of the cost will continue to be covered for populations between 3,000 and 7,000; and 70 per cent of the cost will continue to be covered for municipalities with populations over 7,000.
