Municipal Infrastructure Projects Announced for Petty Harbour-Maddox Cove, Tors Cove and Trepassey
Petty Harbour-Maddox Cove, Tors Cove and Trepassey will receive approximately $547,000 for improvements to municipal infrastructure as part of the 2012 Municipal Capital Works Program.
“We continue to place priority on water and waste water projects throughout the province and these projects reflect this priority,” said the Honourable Kevin O’Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs. “By working in partnership with municipalities and communities, we are able to assist them in delivering services to residents.”
The Town of Petty Harbour-Maddox Cove will receive funding for a new water pressure reducing station and to replace watermain valves in the town. The Town of Trepassey will complete a water storage tank replacement project which commenced as a result of approximately $700,000 in Provincial Government funding through the 2010 Municipal Capital Works Program. The community of Tors Cove will upgrade a 500 metre section of road. Funding is cost-shared based on population, with each town or community providing 10 per cent of the total project cost.
“I am pleased that we are continuing to build on previous years significant infrastructure in communities and regions,” said the Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister of Innovation, Business and Rural Development and the MHA for Ferryland. “Enhancing community infrastructure is a priority of our government and these projects continue to improve the services to our towns.”
Since 2008, the Provincial Government has invested approximately $9 million in the Ferryland District for municipal infrastructure.
Budget 2012: People and Prosperity included $130 million over two years for municipal capital works projects throughout the province. Since 2008, the Provincial Government has invested over $500 million in municipal capital works projects which has resulted in improved municipal infrastructure across the province. These projects have provided municipalities the opportunity to secure, develop and improve infrastructure for residents and support the long-term sustainability of growth and development of communities throughout the province.
The Provincial Government has also maintained improved cost-shared funding ratios established in 2008 to benefit municipalities. For communities with populations below 3,000, the Provincial Government will continue to invest 90 per cent of the cost of new infrastructure with the municipality providing 10 per cent; 80 per cent of the cost will continue to be covered for populations between 3,000 and 7,000; and 70 per cent of the cost will continue to be covered for municipalities with populations over 7,000.
