Provincial Government Announces Home Heating Rebate Details

The Honourable Tom Marshall, Minister of Finance and President of Treasury Board today announced that residents can begin applying for this year’s Home Heating Rebate. Application forms for the 2012-13 program can be downloaded immediately from the Department of Finance’s website.

“With heating costs making up a significant portion of household budgets, the Home Heating Rebate assists residents with a means to offset those costs,” said Minister Marshall. “It is one of the most well-known programs that we offer and last year, 63,000 residents received payments. When you consider that we have also removed the provincial portion of the HST from home energy, Newfoundlanders and Labradorians saved almost $58 million last year.”

The parameters for the program are the same as last year with eligible households with an income of $35,000 or less qualifying for the maximum rebate of $250 ($500 for residents of coastal Labrador). A partial rebate is available to households with adjusted family income above $35,000 but less than $40,000, with a minimum rebate of $100.

Complete details of the Home Heating Rebate Program, including the application form, can be found online at www.gov.nl.ca/fin/homeheating, by calling toll-free at 1-855-223-7432 or by email at homeheatprogram@gov.nl.ca. Application forms will also be available in provincial newspapers, at regional offices of the Department of Advanced Education and Skills, Service NL Centres, and the Seniors Resource Centre in St. John’s.

“We see heating costs continue to increase,” said Minister Marshall. “That’s why the Muskrat Falls project is so important. It will ensure that electricity rates are stable for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians well into the future. We must ensure that all residents, particularly low income earners, have a reliable and affordable electricity source.”
