Pride Week Recognized in Newfoundland and Labrador

The Provincial Government is joining community groups in celebrating Pride Week in Newfoundland and Labrador from July 16 to 22.

“As a government, we are committed to embracing and celebrating the diversity of all people in the province, including lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals,” said the Honourable Charlene Johnson, Minister Responsible for the Status of Women and lead minister for the Violence Prevention Initiative. “I am pleased that each year the number of Pride Week events taking place across the province continues to increase as we work towards equality for all.”

To celebrate Pride Week in St. John’s, there will be a flag raising ceremony at City Hall today (Monday, July 16) at noon, and the annual Pride Parade will be held downtown on Saturday, July 21. There will also be youth bowling, a bonfire, a dance and other events throughout the week. Pride Week is also being celebrated in other regions of the province. The Town of Gander will be flying the Pride Flag all week and the Women’s Centre will hold a reception on Thursday, July 19. Labrador West held their annual Pride Parade earlier this month.

“We have chosen the theme You Are Not Alone for Pride Week this year to show people that there will always be someone there to help them through the hardships and celebrate the good times,” said Robyn Noseworthy, spokesperson for St. John’s Pride Inc. “This week’s festivities are not only intended to include all colours of the rainbow, but also to educate the public and offer support to those who need it.”

Through the Violence Prevention Initiative, the Provincial Government works with community partners and stakeholders to address the root causes of violence and abuse against vulnerable populations in the province, including lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals, as all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians have the right to a safe life, free from fear and harm.

St. John's Pride Inc. is a registered non-profit company that has a mandate to provide and facilitate education, advocacy, networking and issue awareness, as well as coordinate and deliver events that celebrate and promote the visibility of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people and their accomplishments.

Pride Week activities in other areas of the province are run by similar groups, community organizations, student unions, not-for-profit groups, volunteer groups and local businesses. For more information and a complete listing of events in St. John’s, please visit www.stjohnspride.org
