Provincial Government Expresses Concern with ExxonMobil’s Position on Hebron Module

The Honourable Kathy Dunderdale, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, along with the Honourable Jerome Kennedy, Minister of Natural Resources, expressed their displeasure with ExxonMobil’s position regarding the Hebron development as outlined at the NOIA conference today (Thursday, June 21) in St. John’s.

“We are extremely unhappy with ExxonMobil’s position, and their indication they will not live up to the commitments negotiated in the 2008 Hebron Benefits Agreement,” said Premier Dunderdale. “The Hebron development has the ability to fill our province’s fabrication yards to full capacity, and provide valuable employment opportunities for thousands of qualified Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. As I have indicated before, there is a defined process that needs to be followed, and we will pursue all avenues available to us to ensure that this very important work stays in Newfoundland and Labrador.”

There are provisions specified in the 2008 Hebron Benefits Agreement for in-province fabrication. The Provincial Government is determined that an opportunity is not missed for fabrication work to be conducted in Newfoundland and Labrador, and will continue to ensure that work related to the project is kept in the province.

“We disagree with the suggestion made by ExxonMobil that building the third module in the province would delay the project schedule, and we have not been provided with any evidence to support their position,” said Minister Kennedy. “Our own independent assessment combined with two proposals submitted to ExxonMobil to build the third module in the province support our understanding that this work can be done in the province, and would not present any delay to project timelines.”

The Hebron project is a joint venture among Nalcor Energy on behalf of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, Chevron Canada, ExxonMobil Canada, Suncor and Statoil.
