Environmental Assessment Bulletin

The Honourable Terry French, Minister of Environment and Conservation, has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:

Humber Village - River Bank Stabilization (Reg.1657)
Proponent: Brian Johnson  

The proponent proposes to stabilize the river bank adjacent to his property, 1 Maple Street, Humber Village, to prevent further erosion. The proposed site is located on the shoreline of the Humber River near the access bridge to the Humber Village. The project will consist of the construction of a crib wharf and placement of armour stones to stabilize the bank and then filling in behind the armour stones with clean rock fill. The project will begin once approval is granted.

The undertaking was registered on June 27, 2012; the deadline for public comments is August 3, 2012; and the minister’s decision is due by August 11, 2012.

Hopeall Fish Farm Hatchery (Reg. 1656)
Proponent: Newhope Fish Farm Inc.  

The proponent proposes to construct a new fish farm hatchery for salmonids at the former hatchery site in Hopeall, Trinity Bay. The land-based facility is being designed to produce 2.5 million fingerlings/smolt per year. The hatchery complex will consist of the following: two primary buildings including a small incubation building with office and workshop (approximately 200 square metres); ongrowing building where the fingerlings will be grown to commercial size of 60 to 80 grams (approximately 874 square metres); storage shed; and parking and turnaround areas. Construction is planned to commence in the fall 2012 and operations to start in June 2013.

Flat Bay Aggregate Quarry (Reg. 1655)
Proponent: Western Logging Ltd.  

The proponent has submitted a proposal for the development of a 4.6 hectare aggregate quarry located adjacent to the existing Domtar gypsum quarry near Flat Bay in western Newfoundland. Operations will include clearing, grubbing, quarrying and transport of aggregate. Material will be trucked from the proposed quarry site along a private 12 kilometre road to the ship-loading facility located in St. Georges. Construction is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2012.

The undertaking was registered on June 26, 2012; the deadline for public comments is August 3, 2012; and the minister’s decision is due by August 10, 2012.
