Two St. George’s Schools to Receive Roofing Upgrades
A $102,000 tender has been awarded to BDW Roofing of Stephenville to carry out roofing projects at Our Lady of Mercy Elementary and Appalachia High School in St. George’s.
“Over $85,000 will be spent on a new roof for Our Lady of Mercy, while upgrades valued at close to $17,000 will be undertaken at Appalachia High School,” said the Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Education. “This brings the investment in these two schools over the past several years to $320,000.”
Minister Jackman noted that in the past nine years, more than 1,700 repairs and maintenance projects such as this – including new roofs, windows, siding, electrical upgrades and more – have been approved for schools throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.
“This is great news for the students and staff at Our Lady of Mercy Elementary and Appalachia High,” said the Honourable Joan Shea, Minister of Advanced Education and Skills and MHA for St. George’s - Stephenville East. “I am pleased to see continued investments from our government to our educational infrastructure, particularly those within the Bay St. George region.”
Budget 2012 includes $115 million for new and ongoing K-12 infrastructure, including $29 million for priority repairs and maintenance. Since 2004, about $567 million has been allocated for school infrastructure throughout the province. Nine new schools have opened; 10 more are in various stages of planning or construction; 12 major extension and renovation projects have been completed, and seven more are underway or in the planning stages.
