Two Labrador City Schools to Undergo Roofing Upgrades

Roofing projects valued at $689,526 for Menihek High School and Centre educatif L’ENVOL, both in Labrador City, will go ahead this year.

“These roofing jobs are among the more than 1,500 repairs and maintenance projects approved for K-12 schools in the past eight years,” said the Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Education. “Our government has taken a systematic approach to upgrading existing infrastructure over that time period, ensuring that these educational facilities remain safe and comfortable environments in which to teach and learn.”

The Menihek High School tender is valued at $440,248, bringing the total upgrades undertaken at the school, including new windows and interior renovations, to more than $1.7 million since 2004. At Centre educatif L’ENVOL, the roofing contract is valued at $249,278, bringing the total infrastructure spending at the French first-language school over the same time period to almost $1.4 million.

“I am very pleased with the announcement of further investments for Menihek High School and le Centre éducatif l’ENVOL,” said the Honourable Nick McGrath, Minister Responsible for Labrador Affairs and MHA for Labrador West. “We have a francophone community in Labrador City, with such close proximity to Quebec, so it is important to maintain both English and French first-language institutions.”

Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador, includes $94.5 million for new and ongoing K-12 infrastructure projects, including $34.3 million for repairs and maintenance.

Since 2004, the Provincial Government has allocated more than $504 million for school infrastructure. Nine new schools have opened; five more are in various stages of planning or construction; 11 major extension and renovation projects have been completed, and seven more are underway or in the planning stages.
