Winter Ferry Service Across the Straits Made Permanent

The winter ferry service across the Strait of Belle Isle that was provided as a pilot project for the last two years has been made permanent. The Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Transportation and Works, today announced that winter service between Corner Brook and Blanc Sablon, Quebec, will be maintained through an annual investment of $1.3 million.

“This winter service maintains a link between the Island and Labrador when ice conditions prevent the usual crossing between Blanc Sablon and St. Barbe,” said Minister Hedderson. “The two-year pilot project proved valuable to residents and industry, and so I am pleased to announce this further enhancement to the provincial transportation network.”

The pilot project was launched in January 2010 and continued in January 2011. The project saw the MV Apollo and the MV Sir Robert Bond provide service to Blanc Sablon from Corner Brook throughout the winter season, as ice and weather conditions allowed.

“This move shows our government’s commitment to improving transportation services and fostering economic prosperity in Labrador as outlined in the Northern Strategic Plan,” said the Honourable Nick McGrath, Minister Responsible for Labrador Affairs. “This year-round link will allow increased opportunities for business and travel for people throughout the province.”

The Department of Transportation and Works monitored traffic volumes throughout the two-year pilot project. Usage of the service proved consistent and significant, as an average well in excess of 60 passengers used the ferry for each trip it made during the winter months.

St. Barbe remains the Provincial Government’s port for operation of ferry services across the Strait of Belle Isle when ice conditions are not a factor. However, geography and location make it unsuitable for ferry service once sea ice moves in. The Port of Corner Brook has proven to be a successful port for the winter service, as it is the only port on the west coast of the Island that remains ice-free and can accommodate the MV Sir Robert Bond.

The service currently offered by the Apollo will continue from St. Barbe to Blanc Sablon pending ice conditions, until January 15, 2012, when the Apollo comes out of service for its annual refit. The MV Sir Robert Bond will begin providing service between Corner Brook and Blanc Sablon as soon as the Apollo concludes service.
