Improvements Planned for White’s Road near Stephenville

Improvements are being planned for White’s Road in the Noel’s Pond area near Stephenville. The plan is the result of a commitment made to look into options for improving this section of highway.

“This section of White’s Road in the Noel’s Pond area is prone to frequent flooding, and has long been a concern to area residents,” said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Transportation and Works. “The plan we have developed will see this section of road realigned to avoid the flood prone area and to improve traffic flow in the region.”

The plan calls for the realignment of Route 460, White’s Road, to divert the highway around a flood prone area near Noel’s Pond and to upgrade a section of the highway at Gull Pond. The total length of the proposed realignment is approximately 5.6 kilometres.

“I am pleased that the Department of Transportation and Works has studied this issue and developed a plan by which to address it,” said the Honourable Joan Burke, Minister of Education and MHA for St. George’s - Stephenville East. “Improving White’s Road in this area has been a priority, and I am pleased to see us one step closer to addressing this problem.”

The necessary survey and design work for the realignment will begin over the coming months.

“This is great news for the many people of this region who use White’s Road every day,” said Tony Cornect, MHA for Port Au Port. “I am pleased with the plan that has been put forward as I believe it will lead to significant improvement to the transportation network in this area. It was great to have the minister here last week and I look forward to officials of the Department of Transportation and Works coming out to hold an information session for the public.”

The Department of Transportation and Works will hold two open house public information sessions to provide an opportunity for people to view the plan and to ask questions of department officials. The sessions will be held on Wednesday, July 27, at the Holiday Inn in Stephenville from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
