Bridge Work Headed for Western Newfoundland

Four bridges in western Newfoundland will get a makeover this construction season.

“Our government continues to invest in transportation infrastructure,” said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Transportation and Works. “Our bridges are as important as our roadways and this construction season we will rehabilitate these structures in western Newfoundland, thereby strengthening the transportation system in this area of the province.”

The Department of Transportation and Works is calling a tender for the rehabilitation of two bridges. The tender, which will include handrail replacement and the addition of a sidewalk, will provide for rehabilitation of the South Brook Bridge in the Town of Pasadena. The tender will also see improvements to Ballam Bridge on Route 440 through expansion joint replacement and new pavement.

The tender also provides for expansion joint replacement at Steady Brook Bridge, westbound lanes, and at the Riverside Drive underpass, both on the Trans Canada Highway.

“Every year our government invests significantly in the transportation infrastructure in our province and that investment shows itself in projects such as this,” said the Honourable Tom Marshall, Minister of Finance and MHA for Humber East. “These improvements will benefit those in our region who travel our roads every day.”

Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador provides funding of $216.4 million for road and bridge improvements, supplemented by an additional $35.2 million in Federal Government funding, for a total road and bridge investment in 2011-12 of $251.6 million.
