Road Work Announced for Western Newfoundland
Five highways in western Newfoundland will see upgrades this construction season. Two tenders are being called for road work and culvert installation.
“Every summer we hit the ground running with our roads program and we are very pleased to include these necessary projects this season,” said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Transportation and Works. “These projects span from the Burgeo Highway to Sop’s Arm Road and will improve several sections of highway.”
One tender provides for pulverizing and paving of approximately four kilometres on Sop’s Arm Road, approximately 1.5 kilometres on Route 421 from the intersection to Route 420 towards Hampden, and approximately one kilometre on Route 421 from Hampden Wharf towards The Beaches.
“I am very pleased to see these projects slated for this construction season,” said Darryl Kelly, MHA for Humber Valley. “Highway improvement work such as this will benefit the many residents who drive these roads on a regular basis, as well as provide for an improved travelling experience for those who visit our region.”
A second tender provides for the replacement of two pipe culverts with larger pipe arch culverts on the Burgeo Highway near Top Pond.
Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador provides funding of $216.4 million for road and bridge improvements, supplemented by an additional $35.2 million in Federal Government funding, for a total road and bridge investment in 2011-12 of $251.6 million.
