New Pavement and Road Improvements for Port au Port

New pavement will hit roads in Port au Port this summer as the Department of Transportation and Works calls a tender for road work in the area.

“Every inch of new pavement we can lay is a step towards strengthening our highways and roadways,” said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Transportation and Works. “These road improvements will be of benefit to the travelling public, as well as commercial drivers in the region.”

This tender provides for paving on Route 460 from Romaine’s River Bridge towards Port au Port, a distance of approximately one kilometre and for levelling on Route 463 near Piccadilly, a distance of approximately two kilometres. It also provides for the pulverizing and re-paving of sections of Route 462 from Fox Island River towards Point au Mal for a distance of approximately three kilometres.

“I’m very pleased to see these improvements will be made to these three roads this construction season,” said Tony Cornect, MHA for Port au Port. “Improvements to our roads and highways will have a trickle-down effect to benefit our communities and our businesses. As the transportation system is strengthened, travelling our region is easier and more enjoyable, benefiting residents, as well as commercial and recreational travellers.”

Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador provides funding of $216.4 million for road and bridge improvements, supplemented by an additional $35.2 million in Federal Government funding, for a total road and bridge investment in 2011-12 of $251.6 million.
