Tender Called for Bridge Work in Central Newfoundland
As part of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador’s continued improvement of highway infrastructure throughout the province, a tender has been called to begin the first phase of construction toward the replacement of the E.S. Spencer Bridge in central Newfoundland.
“The E.S. Spencer Bridge is 51 years old and has been listed for replacement,” said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Transportation and Works. “Replacing this aging structure will enhance travel efficiency and safety in that part of our province for both the travelling public and the transportation industry.”
The tender provides for the construction of approaches for the replacement of the E.S. Spencer Bridge on the Trans Canada Highway over the Terra Nova River. A tender for the construction of the new bridge is expected to be called in late summer 2011.
“I am pleased this tender has been called and I look forward to work beginning on the replacement for the E.S. Spencer Bridge,” said Sandy Collins, MHA for Terra Nova. “Our government has shown a firm commitment to improving roads and bridges throughout the province, to the benefit of all those who travel our highways.”
Work to be completed under this tender will be cost-shared with the Federal Government under the Building Canada Fund.
The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is continuing its unprecedented commitment to improving and upgrading roads and bridges as part of its multi-year infrastructure strategy valued in excess of $5 billion.
