Western Region Communities Benefit from Recreation Infrastructure Upgrades

Select communities in the western region of the province will see improvements to their recreation infrastructure thanks in part to $45,000 in funding provided through the Provincial Government’s Capital Grant Program.

“The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is committed to improving the province’s recreational infrastructure in order to encourage residents of all ages to pursue more active, healthy lifestyles,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “Improving facilities and equipment will provide area residents with increased opportunities to become physically active on a regular basis.”

Funding was provided to the following:

“I am pleased to see this additional investment in recreational infrastructure for the Town of Steady Brook,” said the Honourable Tom Marshall, Minister of Finance and MHA for Humber East. “This funding will assist this progressive town in continuing to improve its recreational facilities for the benefit of all residents.”

The Town’s of Steady Brook and Howley and the Dunfield Park Community Centre are among more than 50 community-based organizations, municipalities, schools and recreation commissions that have received funding to upgrade their recreation and sport infrastructure through these latest Capital Grant Program investments.

“I am extremely pleased that the new Dunfield Park Community Centre is receiving funding to purchase cardio and fitness equipment,” said Vaughn Granter, MHA for Humber West. “This funding will assist all residents to lead healthier lifestyles in this new and modern facility. As a former educator I am also excited that this equipment will benefit the after school program for youth.”

Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador provides $11.5 million to support recreation and sport in the province.

“This financial support is important to the residents who engage in recreational activities in the facility,” Darryl Kelly, MHA for Humber Valley. “I am pleased that our government is investing in this project and I commend the town on their efforts to improve this facility.”

Since the launch of the Provincial Government’s recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador (2007), more than $70 million has been committed to recreational and sport infrastructure, programming, and athlete development throughout the province.
