Recreational Investment of $30,000 Slated for Bell Island and Torbay

The Wabana Boys and Girls Club on Bell Island and Holy Trinity Elementary in Torbay have each received $15,000 in recreational infrastructure funding through the Provincial Government’s Capital Grant Program.

“The Wabana Boys and Girls Club will use this investment for repairs to the exterior of the building, while Holy Trinity Elementary will utilize the funding to help with the purchase of playground equipment,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “The Provincial Government is pleased to help fund these two worthwhile recreational projects, and is committed to supporting infrastructure aimed at promoting a healthy, active, and fun environment.”

Holy Trinity Elementary and Wabana Boys and Girls Club are among more than 50 community-based organizations, municipalities and recreation commissions that have received funding to upgrade their recreation and sport infrastructure through these latest Capital Grant Program investments.

“Funding for recreational equipment will improve the playground for the students of Holy Trinity,” said Kevin Parsons, MHA for Cape St. Francis. “Playing is an important part of a child’s overall health. Having access to a safe and modern playground is essential.”

David Brazil, MHA for Conception Bay East-Bell Island is also pleased with the grant.

“The funding for Wabana Boys and Girls Club is certainly welcome,” said MHA Brazil. “Providing safe and modern places for youth recreation is important to this community.”

Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador provides $11.5 million to support recreation and sport in the province. Since the launch of the Provincial Government’s recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador (2007), more than $70 million has been committed to recreational and sport infrastructure, programming, and athlete development throughout the province.
