Leslie Harris Centre Benefits from Provincial Government Funding

The Leslie Harris Centre of Regional Policy and Development has received $20,000 in project support through the Provincial Government’s Cultural Economic Development Program. The funding will be used to engage the cultural community in a three-day international conference called Culture, Place and Identity at the Heart of Regional Development.

“This conference is scheduled to take place October 13 to October 15 and will bring together artists, tradition bearers, cultural entrepreneurs, tourism operators, and representatives of regional development organizations,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is committed to supporting efforts that explore how arts, cultural heritage, and cultural industries can further contribute to economic development and quality of life for citizens.”

The Leslie Harris Centre links Memorial researchers with groups across Newfoundland and Labrador, supporting active community engagement throughout the research process. For more information, visit: www.mun.ca/harriscentre

“The financial assistance from the Cultural Economic Development Program will allow us to bring renowned speakers to St. John's who will share their expertise with us here in Newfoundland and Labrador, so that we can build upon their successes,” said Michael Clair, Associate Director of the Harris Centre. “It will also allow us to add excitement to the conference by integrating performances by local artists.”

Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador provides $2.9 million through its Cultural Economic Development Program to support arts, cultural, and heritage initiatives throughout the province. Projects are selected based on the strength of the business plan, vision, and potential development within the sector.
