Over $178,000 Committed to Recreational Programming for Seniors
Newfoundland and Labrador’s older citizens will have more opportunities to engage in physical activities and recreation thanks to a Provincial Government investment of over $178,000 in recreational programming for seniors.
The Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, was at the Worsley Park Community Centre in Conception Bay South today to announce that more than 70 organizations in communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador will benefit from the Seniors Community Recreation Grant Program in 2011-12.
“One of the main goals of the Provincial Government’s recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador, is to increase participation in recreation, sport and physical activity for all residents,” said Minister French. “This program places particular focus on encouraging our senior residents to be more physically active and provides them with increased opportunities to become engaged in their communities, helping their overall well-being.”
The Seniors Community Recreation Grant Program is being delivered in collaboration with the Department of Health and Community Services, as part of its Healthy Aging Policy Framework.
“Our government recognizes the importance of promoting healthy, active lifestyles for all our residents,” said the Honourable Jerome Kennedy, Minister of Health and Community Services and Minister Responsible for Aging and Seniors. “However, we know that it is particularly important to engage our seniors. By providing opportunities for socialization and recreational activities that focus on wellness and prevention, we help our seniors maintain health and independence. We value the contributions of our seniors and aim to put in place the programs and supports that enhance their quality of life.”
Paul Davis, MHA for Topsail, was the master of ceremonies at today’s event.
“Grants that focus on healthy aging benefit hundreds of seniors throughout the Topsail area, from Mount Pearl, Paradise and Conception Bay South,” said MHA Davis. “Programs delivered through groups and municipalities allow our older adults to participate in a variety of events that are both physically active and socially engaging, resulting in a healthy and improved quality of life.”
A list of approved grants can be viewed in the backgrounder below. The Seniors Community Recreation Grant Program is application-based and provides funding to assist in the delivery of new or enhanced recreational programs and services for older citizens.
