Burin Peninsula Funding Improves Recreational Infrastructure

The communities of Burin Bay Arm and Fortune are improving their recreational infrastructure as a result of $30,000 in funding through the Provincial Government’s Capital Grant Program.

“Increasing physical activity and participation in recreation and sport is an important initiative of the Provincial Government,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “Upgrades to community recreation infrastructure will no doubt encourage residents of the area, especially children and youth, to participate in healthy activities.”

Donald C. Jamieson Academy in Burin Bay Arm received $15,000 to purchase new equipment and stone for the local playground.

“Increasing access to physical activity for students at Jamieson Academy will go a long way in encouraging healthy lifestyles,” said the Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture and MHA for Burin - Placentia West. “Having our youth engaged in recreation at school will increase their knowledge and demonstrate the importance of being active.”

The Town of Fortune Playground Committee received $15,000 to redevelop the local park.

“I am delighted with the Provincial Government’s continued support of recreation in my area,” said the Honourable Darin King, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment and MHA for Grand Bank. “Today’s announcement for the Town of Fortune Playground Committee is another great investment to benefit the youth in the town. It is important that we continue working together to provide recreation facilities within our communities to give residents an opportunity to be physically active and enjoy healthy lifestyles. I want to thank the volunteers of Fortune for their efforts with this project.”

Donald C. Jamieson Academy and the Town of Fortune Playground Committee are among more than 50 community-based organizations, municipalities, schools and recreation commissions that have received funding to upgrade their recreation and sport infrastructure through these latest Capital Grant Program investments.

Budget 2011 Standing Strong: For Prosperity. For Our Future. For Newfoundland and Labrador provides $11.5 million to support recreation and sport in the province. Since the launch of the Provincial Government’s recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador (2007), more than $70 million has been committed to recreational and sport infrastructure, programming, and athlete development throughout the province.
